Nephrotic Syndrome in Children, Signs Symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome is the group of symptoms associated with kidney disorders. Human beings have two kidneys, which are nearly fist size. The functional and structural unit of kidney is called Nephron. The nephrons in kidneys, filters the blood and removes nitrogenous waste, and excess water from body. During nephrotic syndrome, these nephrons fail to filter blood clearly. Unfiltered wastes stays in body, causes tissue swelling and edema.
Nephrotic syndrome occurs both in children and adults, but children have more chances of nephrotic syndrome. Children between 1 to 5 years are at risk of Nephrotic syndrome.
In rare cases, congenital nephropathy is the disease also causes childhood Nephrotic syndrome.
Provide enough fluids to drink during nephritic syndrome and access medical help to get treatment. Nephrotic syndrome is not a life threatening disease, if is treated with appropriate medicines.
Minimal change disease may be associated with Nephrotic syndrome.
Urine and blood samples are the tested to diagnose Nephrotic syndrome in children. Kidney biopsy is done when the clear laboratory result is not obtained with blood and urine test. Kidney biopsy is done very rarely.
Signs and symptoms of Nephrotic syndrome in children
- Protein urea: Presence of albumin and other proteins in urine in high level because of improper filtration is called as Protein urea.
- Swelling or edema: Nitrogenous wastes which are not excreted from body leads to edema or swelling. Swelling and edema are the common symptoms of Nephrotic syndrome.
- Hyperlipidemia, and Hypoalbuminemia are the medical terms used for increased lipid level in the blood and decreased albumin level in the blood respectively. Hyperlipidemia, and Hypoalbuminemia are the main symptoms of Nephrotic syndrome in children.
- Decreased level of protein in blood is also the symptom of Nephrotic syndrome.
- Frequent urination due to irritation.
- Increase in weight due to excess fluid accumulation in body is the sign of nephritic syndrome in some patients.
Accurate treatment helps in reducing symptoms and relieves nephrotic syndrome.
