This open angle glaucoma develops slowly and gradually, hence is called as chronic glaucoma. The open angle glaucoma is more common of glaucoma. Even though the exact cause of open angle glaucoma is not known, the individual may get open angle glaucoma through inheritance. If the father or grandfather had a history of open angle glaucoma, the younger one have chance to get chronic type glaucoma. African people have high risk of getting of open angle glaucoma. This blockage of angle in the eye and damage to the optic nerve occurs chronically or gradually and painless.

Closed angle glaucoma occurs due to blockage of exit of aqueous humor from eye ball. The increase in intraocular pressure causes pain in the eye ball.
