Fainting during Pregnancy and Pregnancy Dizziness Treatment


Pregnancy is usually associated with nausea. Most of the mothers experience giddiness during pregnancy along with faintness. Pregnant mother expresses vertigo or dizziness as light headedness. Dizziness during pregnancy is not a severe problem and is because of changes in hormone level of body.

Causes of dizziness during pregnancy

Physiological changes : Sudden fluctuation in the pregnant mother’s blood pressure is the main cause of dizziness or light headedness during pregnancy. The pregnant mother undergoes certain changes during pregnancy such as increased heart beat, increased blood pressure, and blood volume also increases during pregnancy. All these physiological changes during pregnancy along with some pregnancy hormone changes, causes Dizziness during pregnancy or fainting during pregnancy.

Gestational age : Usually in the second month of pregnancy or the third month of pregnancy, the pregnant mother feels giddiness.

Body position: Lying on back also causes giddiness. The uterine change during pregnancy compresses the inferior venacava and reduces the blood flow to heart and this leads to decreased blood supply to vital organs. Reduced glucose supply to brain causes fainting or dizziness during pregnancy.

Mental status and mental health: Increased anxiety and mental stress also causes fainting during pregnancy. Excess work load and increased physical exercise also causes fainting or dizziness during pregnancy.

Anemia and general health: Decreased blood volume or anemia also causes fainting. Because of decreased hemoglobin level the body tissues such as brain cells won’t get sufficient glucose, oxygen and nutrients. This leads to fainting or giddiness during pregnancy.

Diet and nutrition: Eating diet enriched with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and macro nutrients such as carbohydrate, protein, and fat in adequate quantity helps in controlling giddiness during pregnancy.

Align body position: Change the position when you feel fainting, light headedness, or giddiness. Lie down to bed as soon as you feel giddiness and take complete bed until you get relief.

While you sleep in the night, lie down to your left side as right shoulder to be up. This left lateral position provides sufficient blood to heart for pumping to different parts of the body.  

Postural changes: Avoid sudden postural changes. When you wake up from the bed, get up slowly. Sudden change in lying down position to standing position usually causes fainting or giddiness in pregnant mother

Nutritional supplementation: Consuming sufficient fluids, fruit juices and fruits helps in reducing faintness and dizziness during pregnancy. Sufficient fluid levels in the body and improved glucose level in the blood helps in controlling pregnancy dizziness.

Cold water bath also gives much relief from pregnancy dizziness.

When to seek medical help

Severe headache with dizziness need medical help

Recurrent dizziness during pregnancy and if it continues for more than two days need medical assistance for better healthcare.

If  the pregnant mother feels fatigue and general weakness may be suffering from anemia and nutritional deficiency. This anemia and pregnancy weakness need to be corrected with iron and folic acid, and balanced diet supplementation.

Low blood pressure need to be treated with administration of fluids immediately and treating the cause of low blood pressure.

    At the time of pregnancy, herbal dizziness medication is the best solution to cure from dizziness.
