Presence of bright red blood or maroon blood in the stools is called as blood in stool. As blood in stool is not common, when the person confirms blood in stool for first time may become anxious. The cause of blood in stool may vary from hemorrhoids to cancers in the gastro intestinal tract. Even untreated gastritis or gastric ulcers also causes blood in stool.

Symptoms of blood in stool

Bright red blood appears in stool when there is hemorrhoids or tumors in the lower gastro intestinal tract. Bright blood in stool occurs with colon, rectal, or anal injuries, bleeding or tumors. Recurrent and blood in stool witnessed for more than five days may be because of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. Maroon colored blood appears in stool when gastric or intestinal bleeding.

Hematochezia is the term used for rectal bleeding. Usually the rectal bleeding caused bright red blood in stool.

Even some food materials also causes blood in stool. Undigested fat with gastric bleeding may cause bloody mucus stool. Pepper and other spicy materials may cause blood in stool.

Sometimes the stool appears black or terry is called as Malena. The blood stained stool staying long time in the colon becomes black with the action of bacteria. Most of the peoples ignores black stools as they can’t see the blood. When the terry stool is tested for blood in the laboratory, it confirms blood in stool.
